You chose this path because you care. You knew it would be difficult but that didn’t scare you off. Maybe you were accustomed to being at the top of the class and now you feel like you’re like everyone else - struggling to make it through grueling shifts and difficult patient choices with mild-to-moderate dehydration and little sleep.

Medical training is designed to be grueling and many programs don’t offer adequate support to help those trying to deal with anxiety, depression, burnout, moral injury, or self-soothing with substances. The pressure is intense- you’re learning to be responsible for choices that save lives or alleviate suffering. The price of a mistake can feel high, sometimes terrifying. Nobody warned you the medical system would ask you to do so much with so few resources.

You’ve always been a perfectionist but medical training has kicked that into overdrive. It’s exhausting. It’s difficult to set and maintain healthy boundaries between your medical self and your personal self. Your personal self always seems to be the one neglected. You haven’t purchased groceries in weeks and you barely have the energy to eat a bowl of cereal at the end of some days. You wonder what you signed up for and if it’s the right path for you.

I work with medical trainees - medical students, interns, residents, physicians assistants, nurse practitioners to find balance amid the chaos. Together we’ll find healthier outlets for the stress, challenge the thought patterns that create depressed and anxious thoughts, and create a system of self-care that will sustain you through your program.
